Bojack Horseman | How to be cheerful through depression
What's with all this horsin' around? What's this series about? We all know it's about a depressed horsey in LA. The writers pulled-off a creative masterclass by making the best of this rather parodic premise.
It goes way beyond a cynical approach of being a celebrity. It has it all: Mental health awareness, distinctive and complex humour, really well drawn animation, all-rounded characters, feelings validation and it tackles sensitive and present issues using Hollywood-esque clichees. But most of all, it hits home.
The show portrays destructive methods of coping with trauma and constant pressure of delivering in life. It shows that nothing is black or white and that being a good person is not a matter of doing it or not. Sometimes the damage one suffers is almost irreversible and by saying that I am in no way excusing abusive behaviour. It's just how life is. For some it's a long process and some people may never succeed.
What's the most impressive is how can a cartoon be so meaningful and impactful. It's only animation after all. The creators use this to their advantage by forming metaphors and shocking scenarios that don't look like real life, but they do look like real thoughts.
I don't know if I should recommend this to people who are having a bad time in their life. It could be a comfort show, as the vastly majority of it is mostly pure comedy. Just watch it at least once in a lifetime.
